Kirk Hammett's Predictable Solos: A Deep Dive into 72 Seasons

PJ Pat Season 3 Episode 4

Send us a text

In this episode, we delve into Kirk Hammett's spontaneous approach to recording solos for Metallica's album '72 Seasons.' Unlike his meticulously composed solos from iconic albums like 'Master of Puppets' and 'The Black Album,' Hammett's new style uses the blues scale excessively, resulting in predictable and uninspiring solos. He improvised 20 to 30 solos and left the editing to Lars Ulrich and Greg Fidelman, but the end result leaves much to be desired.

Rock on! Thanks for listening.

[00:00:00] one thing I learned while watching one of the Kurt Hammett's interviews is that he actually approached the recording of 72 Seasons in a more spontaneous approach when crafting his solos, and I gotta say it definitely shows that

[00:00:12] his solos I find on this album is like super predictable. He loves that blues scale and he uses the crap out of it.

[00:00:20] All his licks, you've kind of heard him before. There's nothing original in it. It's just a very uninspiring display of soloing really. That's when it comes down to it. Instead of meticulously composing each one like he's done in the past, he's got some epic solos on Masters and Injustice for All, some of his best solos are on the Black Album, Sad But True comes to mind.

[00:00:42] Check him out on here. Look at this. Look, he looks so sad and disappointed. That's exactly how I feel. Kirk Hammett actually has a quote saying that he improvised 20 to 30 solos and recording 72 seasons, gave them all to Lars and Greg Fidelman, and went You guys edit him now.
